Weekly Musings: 5 Bold Ideas for the New Year

Published:

The practice of making New Year’s resolutions reminds us that setting an intention combines the unlimited powers of brain and belief together. The brain is our body’s command center, coordinating with lightning speed and precision all the impulses, responses and physical processes we experience as life. Beliefs are what we communicate to the brain, both consciously and subconsciously, that help steer the course. Belief is a powerful force. In the words of Henry Ford, “Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right.”

Free will allows us to examine our beliefs and alter them in any way we choose. Why waste time feeding negative beliefs to the brain when you can propel yourself towards positive results and radical rewards instead?

Here are five bold ideas to consider for 2016.

1. You’re going to get everything that’s coming to you. You didn’t create the books, so forget about keeping score, nickel and diming, worrying about being cheated or not getting your fair share. Release yourself of carrying all those unnecessary burdens and know that everything always evens out perfectly in the end. What you miss selling peanuts, you’ll make up with the popcorn.

2. Food is medicine. Knowing that every bite you take is medicine sends a message to the brain that "we’re in healing mode," so the brain carries out that directive in the body. Even if you find yourself eating junk, your belief in food as medicine will naturally readjust your food choices little by little until you are eating more and more good food.

3. Right now is exactly where you are supposed to be. Especially in painful or stressful moments, start from this premise in whatever situation you find yourself in and work from there to find the resolution. Like a stubborn word that finally emerges within a challenging crossword puzzle, every problem ultimately contains its own solution if you stick around patiently enough to find it.

4. You own nothing but are caretaker of much. The things and people around you in your life will receive more careful attention when you realize that they are not yours, but that you are responsible for taking care of them. Release your expectations of ownership; expect nothing in return. See #1.

5. Ignore it and keep going. Mostly this refers to self criticism and self doubt. Simply ignore it and move on. But in the event you fail or make a mistake, just keep going. Amazingly, you will arrive exactly where you are supposed to be.
