The Dowsing State of Mind

Published:

For those new to dowsing, it is strongly recommended that you learn to temper your initial enthusiasm. Let the fascination and intrigue of learning how to dowse settle in first, before even thinking of attempting a search beyond your current level of learning and experience.

Enthusiasm is great, but dedication to learning the basics is far better. Sit back. Relax. Read. Calm your mind. Let the dust settle for a while before attempting to jump ahead into areas with which you are only vaguely familiar and which could land you in a world of trouble.

There's a lot of background experience necessary and a number of preliminary steps to learn and burn into your brain before heading out on your first field dowsing experience, beginning with the state of one's own mind.

The dowsing state of mind is undoubtedly the first subject that needs to be discussed in detail since it is the most important aspect in dowsing. With most other skills, one tries to learn with furrowed brow and countless repetitive motions. With dowsing, however, the only effort necessary is to learn how to relax and allow.

It's like a push/pull difference between dowsing and other skills. If you push on the door to learn dowsing, you'll soon find it will only work when you pull.

The point is that one does not make dowsing work by trying. One does set their mind in a passive state of awareness and allow the dowsing process to occur through them. In this regard, learning how to dowse properly is the opposite of learning any other skill. The more passive and allowing one becomes, the better the dowser. It's as simple as that.

Our ego mind is the predominant state of consciousness in everyday matters. It is that part of us involved with self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-respect, but none of these traits are of service during the dowsing process. The dowsing state of mind is one in which the ego mind — the conscious mind — is quieted, relaxed, balanced, stilled, and blank.

"But ...but..." you say, "my mind runs a million miles an hour! There is always something running through my mind." Congratulations. You've just learned your first dowsing lesson. Never dowse when your mind is in a heightened state of activity. That's your ego talking, not your mind. Slow down. Relax. Free yourself from all extraneous thoughts. Relax relax relax.

Close your eyes and allow yourself to slowly enter into a state of calmness. Feel your facial and shoulder muscles relax and all outside tensions float away.

If you meditate, do so. It's a good way to mentally slow down the mind and achieve the state of relaxation necessary to begin dowsing. If you aren't aware of any meditative procedures, that's OK, too. Just relax. It isn't necessary to contort yourself into uncomfortable positions and repeat a mantra. All you have to do is to sit quietly, close your eyes, and allow yourself to physically and mentally relax.

A reminder: Dowsing is a simple skill. It isn't easy, but it is simple.

Exercises To Help Calm The Mind

One of the easiest ways that I've found to slow down the mental chatter is to imagine myself inside an empty movie theater, lights dimmed, sitting close to the front, and staring at a white screen. Most times there will be mind critters running back and forth, pictures of things to remember or chores to do, and a variety of other scenes and interferences.

I've learned to allow them to do their thing. I've discovered that if I look at them, or even think about them, I'm giving them energy and they'll remain on the screen. But by staring straight ahead and not paying attention to them, the interferences will not have my focused energy and therefore will lessen and eventually leave, until I'm left with only a solid blue or purple colored screen. My ego brain is now quieted. My mind is blank and ready to accept dowsing input.

There are other simple methods to clear the mind as well, such as listening to environmental tapes, looking at the changing clouds, sitting by a stream, etc. I'm sure you can think of a dozen different ways, but the important point is to be able to clear your mind of interfering outside thoughts at will.

Again, the first requirement of dowsing is to be open and receptive without ego interferences. If the ego mind is still present, its desire to control will override all phases of the dowsing search and provide you with false information. Teaching the ego mind to let go and sit on the sideline is the only way to open the pathway to receive dowsing information. This, then, is your dowsing state of mind.
