Zero Roadkill As Amazon Canopy Bridges Secure 15,000 Crossings

Around 7 a.m., with dense fog blanketing the landscape, biologist Gabriel Falquetto had already come across several road-killed animals along ES-164 highway in Brazil’s Espírito Santo state. He was on his way to Kaetés Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), in the Atlantic Forest, where he monitors wildlife and roadkill in the region. Suddenly, he spotted the lifeless body of a primate on the pavement. It was a buffy-headed marmoset (Callithrix flaviceps), a species listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. An estimated 2,500 individuals remain in the wild, making it one of the world’s most threatened primates.
Mamdani’s Grocery Stores Will Offer 30 Percent Discount On Some Products

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has promised that city-owned grocery stores will bring down prices for shoppers. On Monday, he announced the exact discount: 30 percent for some basic groceries, including vegetables, meat, bread and milk. The city is moving to select private operators to run five city-owned stores, one in each borough. The city will build the stores and waive rent and property taxes. It is also expected to provide an operating subsidy to help pay for the discounts. The discount will cover a “core basket” of healthy groceries, including produce, meat, seafood, pasta, bread, yogurt, butter, nuts, rice and beans.
Goodbye, Cavities? New Gel Could Regrow Tooth Enamel

Scientists at the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy and Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering created the material to imitate the biological processes that form enamel naturally. Their findings, published in Nature Communications, suggest the gel could repair enamel that has been weakened by mineral loss or erosion, reinforce enamel that is still healthy, and help protect teeth from future damage. Dentists could apply the gel quickly using a process similar to the way fluoride treatments are administered today. Unlike conventional fluoride products, however, the new gel contains no fluoride.
Free Meals For All: Michigan Sets Aside $200M So No Student Goes Hungry At School

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a budget committing $200 million to guarantee free breakfast and lunch for every public school student in Michigan, regardless of income. The funding is expected to save Michigan families approximately $1,000 per year, per child. According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, nearly a quarter of a million school children in Michigan rely on school as the only place to eat a consistent meal. Detrick Pops, a parent who said he had to pay for meals at school growing up, said he welcomes the change.
Leopards Recover In Zambia As Communities Swap Skins For Synthetics

Big cat conservationists in Zambia say leopard numbers are rebounding thanks in part to local communities swapping real furs for synthetic in traditional ceremonies. Leopards are revered by cultural and religious groups which use their prized pelts as ceremonial regalia. In western Zambia, during an annual event marking the onset of the flood season, 200 paddlers ferry the king of the Lozi people, the Litunga, on a barge. They wear skirts fashioned largely from leopard skins, and demand for the striking outfits is believed to have been one of the drivers of leopard poaching.
