The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement targets sustainable use of marine biodiversity in international waters. The world’s first global treaty to protect ocean life in international waters enters into force on 17 January 2026, bringing into effect legally-binding rules for the sustainable use and management of marine resources in the high seas.

One of America’s largest airlines is also its most generous. Delta Airlines will pay out around $1.3 billion in profit sharing payments, representing not only one of the largest payouts in the company’s history, but a larger sum than the whole industry together. Celebrated on Valentine’s Day, Profit Sharing Day sees Delta employees receive a divided share equal to 10% of all company revenue up to the first $2.5 billion, rising to 20% for each dollar above $2.5 billion.

After a routine trip to her mailbox, Dawn Daly-Mack almost threw away an important letter that she thought was junk mail. “I opened it up and it said, ‘Your medical bill has been paid,'” says Daly-Mack, 60, who lives in Gaston, in northeastern North Carolina. “I didn’t believe it.” The letter turned out to be legitimate. Daly-Mack is one of about 2.5 million North Carolinians whose medical debt was erased under a new statewide agreement with hospitals.

A United Parcel Service driver at work recently charged into a burning home outside Los Angeles and carried a centenarian woman out to safety in what officials called a “remarkable” example of “people looking out for one another in a moment of need”. As his heroics drew attention in online circles dedicated to finding uplifting stories in the media, Willy Esquivel told the Los Angeles news outlet KTLA that he was “just a UPS driver who was in the right place at the right time”. “I just did what I thought was right,” Esquivel said to KTLA. “At the end of the day, she’s someone’s mother, someone’s grandmother, great-grandmother.”
