New Elephant Ambulance Marks Inaugural Rescue, Bringing 27-Year-Old To Hospital With Leg Injury

An animal conservation/welfare organization has had to think big to solve a big challenge: how to transport elephants in need of veterinary care across long distances. Their response is the brand new “Elephant Ambulance,” a specially designed truck built to move elephants in a way that protects both them and everybody else on the road. The organization, Wildlife SOS, got to send out their new pachyderm paramedics over the last weekend of February, when they identified a 27-year-old elephant in rural Uttar Pradesh, India, with an injured leg. Named Veer, the elephant had lived his life as a “Begging Elephant,” which refers to animals used for labor.

While Bad Bunny may have remained the highlight of Super Bowl LX’s post-mortem, GNN got in touch with the event organizers to unwrap a little of the full-time good behind half-time’s Bad. The National Football League’s environmental program, NFL Green, contracted ENGIE Impact, a sustainable resource management company, to work with national and local partners in the Bay Area to ensure that carbon emissions from the event were offset, all stadium waste was recycled, and stadium power was green and renewable. ENGIE Impact also helped organize the NFL Green’s sustainability operations during the last Super Bowl in New Orleans.
Moving Companies Offer Free Moves To Domestic Violence Victims In 8 States – Thousands, So Far

The program they launched has inspired over 200 businesses to pledge free services.
Brazilian Amazon On Track For Record Low Deforestation

The Brazilian Amazon is on pace to see forest clearing hit a record low this year, government figures show. Officials credit the decline to stepped-up enforcement against illegal deforestation. Brazil tracks yearly deforestation starting in August and ending in July. From August through the end of January, the Amazon has seen just 516 square miles of forest cleared, according to satellite data. That is the lowest figure for this period since 2014. The sharp decline reflects a crackdown on illicit clearing by miners, loggers, and farmers under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who returned to office in 2023.
Giant Tortoises Return To Galápagos Island After Nearly 200 Years

Giant tortoises are roaming the Galápagos island of Floreana for the first time in more than 180 years, in what conservationists have called a “hugely significant milestone”. The release of 158 captive-bred juvenile tortoises onto the island is part of the Floreana Ecological Restoration Project led by the Galápagos National Park Directorate. The reintroduction follows a “back-breeding” programme launched in 2017 after scientists discovered tortoises carrying ancestry of the Floreana giant tortoise on nearby Isabela island. Floreana’s native species, Chelonoidis niger niger, was driven to extinction in the 1840s by sailors who took thousands from the island for sustenance during long voyages.
