‘Extraordinary Event’ For Mountain Gorillas As New Twins Born In DRC
by Patrick Greenfield, The Guardian
A second set of mountain gorilla twins has been born in Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in what conservationists are celebrating as an “extraordinary” event for the endangered primates. Just two months after tiny twin mountain gorillas were discovered by rangers in the Virunga massif, in eastern DRC, another rare twin birth has been found by park wardens. This time, an infant male and female have been spotted in the Baraka family, a troop of 19 mountain gorillas that roam the region’s high-altitude rainforests.
Volunteers Plant ‘Mega Hedge’ 15 Miles Across England, Connecting Wildlife In Two National Parks
by Andy Corbley, Good News Network
From England’s South Downs National Park, one can trace a series of traditional hedgerows off into the distance farther than it’s possible to see. This mega hedge runs all the way across the county of Hampshire, to New Forest National Park, some 15 miles in length. The Hampshire Hedge, as it’s called, has been three years in the making, as volunteers and experts at making traditional hedges have come together to build an unbroken line of hedgerows connecting the two parks and their wildlife. Far more than just a fence or barrier, it’s been shown that hedgerows are vital habitat corridors, even as slim as they are.
Scientists Were Wrong About How Fast Solar Panels Degrade – They May Last Twice As Long
by Andy Corbley, Good News Network
A huge scientific survey of over 1 million German solar installations has revealed a surprising statistic: their potential to degrade year by year has been significantly exaggerated. Previous models have overestimated the rate of degradation in a solar installation’s ability to generate power by between 20% to 50% according to this new survey. “Back of the envelope,” the authors admit, “the estimated cost of degradation would decrease, compared to previous findings, by about €638 million per year to maintain installed capacity in 2040.” Germany has been steaming forward with green energy installation for 20 years.
As Of January 1, “Product Of USA” Finally Means What You Think It Means
by Farm Action
For years, meat could be imported and still carry a “Product of USA” label as long as it was processed or repackaged in the United States. That is why so many shoppers assumed they were buying American, and why so many ranchers felt the market slipping out from under them. The rules rewarded the company that could source the cheapest foreign cattle or beef, move it through a U.S. plant, and sell it under a label that suggested it was domestic. That undercut the price paid to ranchers and stole shelf space from real U.S. products.
Delta Suspends Specialty Services For Members Of Congress Amid Shutdown-Driven TSA Delays
by Suzanne Gamboa and Jonathan Allen, NBC News
Delta Air Lines has cut off special services for members of Congress at airports, as the industry continues to feel the effects of the government’s failure to pay Transportation Security Administration workers. On Tuesday morning, Delta issued a statement saying it would temporarily suspend specialty services for members of Congress “due to the impact on resources from the longstanding government shutdown.” Members of Congress are given special treatment at airports, including expedited screening, escorts through airports to bypass long security lines.
