Fish Are Thriving In The River Seine
by Peter Yeung, Reasons to Be Cheerful
On a damp and grimly grey winter day in Paris, Bill François is a beacon of positivity. After a brief stroll along the River Seine, we come to a halt at the Henri IV Dock with Notre Dame cathedral just about visible through the mist. Here, François flicks his wrist back and then gently launches a fishing line out into the choppy waters. “The Seine is a wild place in the heart of Paris,” enthuses François, who has come prepared in an all-weather outfit that includes a cap, sunglasses and waterproof pants. “It’s like an aquarium. The water is quite clear these days and the fish are multiplying.”
Solar And Wind Are Being Installed At A Rate Five Times Faster Than All Other New Electricity Sources Combined
by International Solar Energy Society (ISES), pv magazine
Solar and wind are being installed at a rate that is five times faster than all other new electricity sources combined. This offers compelling market-based evidence that PV and wind are now the most competitive and practical methods for deploying new generating capacity. In 2024, global new solar generation capacity was deployed 100 times faster than net new nuclear capacity according to recent data from the World Nuclear Association, the International Energy Agency and Ember. New wind was deployed 25 times faster than nuclear. The fastest energy change in history continues.
Interest In Alternative Healing Modalities Has Grown 9x Since 2016
by Edvardas Garbenis, Healthnews
By analyzing Google search trends for 35 of the most prominent alternative healing modalities, we reveal a staggering 837% global increase in interest — from 7.09 million monthly searches in 2016 to 66.41 million in 2024. In the U.S. alone, the rise is also remarkable, with a 694% surge in search volume during the period. It’s important to note that the increases in these search volumes should be interpreted considering that from 2016 to 2024, there was around a 70% increase in global internet users (from 3.26 billion to 5.52 billion). However, the search volume growth for alternative healing modalities far outpaced this increase.
Tigers In India See Remarkable Population Recovery
by Shireen Gonzaga, EarthSky
Tigers once roamed widely across Asia. However, by the early 2000s, they were only present in 10% of their historic range. On January 30, 2025, scientists said tiger numbers in India have increased two-fold since 2010. This is despite India being the world’s most populous country with just 18% of global tiger habitat. Researchers said there are now over 3,600 tigers in India; that’s 75% of the world’s tiger population. Researchers published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal Science on January 30, 2025.
While Czech Region is Busy Planning Hydro-Project, Beavers Do it For Them–Saving Millions
by Andy Corbley, Good News Network
Gnawing through tree trunks and bureaucratic red tape alike, a colony of Czech beavers recently built a dam exactly where local administrators needed it. Conservationists often talk about species or landscapes performing “ecosystem services” that benefit human civilization. These beavers in the Brdy Protected Landscape demonstrated this phenomenon to a stunning degree, saving the local government 30 million Czech crowns—around $1.2 million. Management staff in Brdy were looking for planning permission for a dam and reservoir project from the Vltava River Basin authorities, but the process was lagging. That’s when local beavers built their dam in the proposed location virtually overnight.
