Keep Your Root Chakra In Balance This Winter

The root chakra, known as Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine, and governs our sense of safety, security, and connection to Earth. When balanced and aligned so energy flows freely through it, the root chakra fosters feelings of groundedness, healthy connections with oneself and others, trust in life’s rhythms, and a sense of stability.

However, with the arrival of colder temperatures, reduced sunlight, and decreased physical activity, primal fight or flight survival reflexes are easily activated, energy may be depleted, and the root chakra may get sluggish and lose its balance.

Here are a few tips to nurture and support your root chakra during the winter season.

NOURISH YOUR BODY WITH RED AND ROOT FOODS. Consuming root vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, turnips, and ginger can provide grounding energy and support the vitality of your root chakra. You can also choose red foods such as radishes, apples, tomatoes and strawberries. Getting enough protein from sources like fish, nuts, seeds, and beans is equally important, as protein is an essential building block for your body and can help you achieve strength and grounding.

CONNECT WITH NATURE, INDOORS OR OUT. Despite the colder weather, spending time in nature can be revitalizing. Even a short walk or moments spent breathing in the winter air can work wonders for this chakra. And if you’re not wanting to bundle up and face the harsh cold outside, you can always create an indoor forest bathing experience by surrounding yourself with potted plants and wooden items, sipping herbal tea, playing nature sounds, and using woodsy scents to simulate a nature-rich atmosphere.

CHANT LAM. Use the power of sound by chanting LAM, the mantra associated with the root chakra. Chant this mantra in a quiet space, allowing its vibrations to resonate within you, fostering stability and connection. You can follow along with this recorded meditation for guidance.

PRACTICE FIRM FOOTING YOGA POSES. Engage in yoga poses with a firm footing foundation. Poses like mountain pose, downward dog, tree pose or warrior II will help you find and develop a strong, stable foundation.

PRACTICE THE RED ORB MEDITATION. Meditation and visualization exercises can also help rebalance your root chakra. Picture a vibrant, glowing red orb at the base of your spine. Imagine the orb expanding with each inhale, strengthening your sense of security and vitality while releasing any stuck energy or fears with each exhale. You can follow along with this recorded meditation for guidance.

WEAR THE COLOR RED. Red, strongly linked with the root chakra, can serve as a visual reminder to prioritize its well-being. Incorporate red clothing or accessories into your everyday attire to infuse you with a sense of grounding and stability. Before adopting this practice, make sure to set a deliberate intention to open and balance your root chakra, inviting strength and trust into your day and life.

GET INTROSPECTIVE. Journaling can be a powerful tool to explore and heal imbalances in any chakra, including your emotional and spiritual body. Here are some root chakra specific prompts to guide your journaling:

  • Reflect on your earliest memories related to safety and security. How have these experiences shaped your sense of stability in adulthood?
  • Describe moments when you have felt most grounded and secure. What factors contributed to these feelings? How can you replicate or invite more of these experiences into your life?
  • Are there any fears or insecurities that continually surface for you? How do these impact your sense of stability and security? What steps can you take to address or alleviate these concerns?
  • Consider your current living space. How does it support or hinder your sense of security and stability? Are there changes you can make to create a more grounding environment at home?

Nurturing your root chakra is an ongoing process that contributes significantly to your overall well-being and connection to Earth in any season, but try paying special attention to your root chakra this winter with these practices.
