How To Break Out Of An Energy Rut

Everyone becomes stuck in an energy rut from time to time. We feel sluggish, run down, out of balance, or feel as though we have lost our mojo. Our routines become ordinary and mundane. Sometimes we blame our family, friends, environment and work for not making us happy, but the question you must ask yourself is, “Are you living a life that makes you feel happy and authentic?”

We are surrounded by many external influences that drain us and cause insecurities. Questions surface such as, “Am I a good person? Am I a good parent? Am I a good worker? Am I good enough?” Society and mainstream media has conditioned us to compete, not necessarily in a good way, with others as well as with ourselves. In order to keep up, we must act, look, think, and do things in a manner that is acceptable to others. We become slaves to conventional living.

When our lives have become so programmed that we forget how to listen to our inner wisdom, we become reliant on others as to how we should live and act. We don't express our opinions due to fears of being criticized or ostracized. Instead of standing in our light, we hide in our shadows.

How can we break out of these energy ruts? The first step is to accept who you are and welcome your limitations and imperfections. By overcoming your fears, you can break the repetitious cycle, and begin trusting your natural instincts so that you can become who you truly are.

We all have the ability to figure things out for ourselves, but the fear of making a mistake keeps us living in the world of status quo.

It takes courage to make any life changes, whether large or small. Minor changes are just as powerful as big changes, and you have to start somewhere! For example, if you are a person who doesn’t like to exercise, consider adding 15-minute walks into your wellness routine. Or if you usually go out to dinner on Sunday, consider going on Friday or Saturday instead. If you haven’t called your best friend in ten years, pick up the phone and reconnect. By changing your habits and routine, this will not only add variety, but can be the start of a chain reaction to transformation.

Here are some tips that have helped me to break my energy ruts:

Recognize – Am I happy with where I am right now? Am I tired of the same routine? Do I feel stuck and just spinning my wheels, but remaining motionless? What changes can I make today?

Quiet Down Mental Chatter — To help me stomp out my unwelcomed internal chatter, I go for long walks with my puppies several times a day. Nature helps me to ease and suppress my internal chaos. Walking is my meditation time and also my time to talk to God.

Journal — Because I write so much, I have learned to free myself through writing. I have had many honest conversations with myself during these sessions while I’m developing the next action plan.

Family and Friends – Do they help or hinder me? As much as I love my family and friends, sometimes they are ones who hamper my development. If I become different, does that mean I no longer need them? Or will they reject me and treat me differently? Will I become less connected to them? These are some scary thoughts! Change is scary but necessary for growth!

Take the time to have an honest look at your life, and evaluate your needs. By doing so, you will begin to free yourself from your energy rut and work towards living a genuine life.
